Department of Plant Sciences




  • recruitment and induction of all technical staff, including job specification and interviewing. General induction of all new assistant staff;
  • Authorising leave, overtime, monitoring staff absences and dealing with day to day discipline/welfare. Monitoring and management of overtime budget for department;
  • managing work experience placements;
  • available to advise assistants on problems of any kind, particularly on the development of personal skills;
  • appraiser of assistant staff as required by Departmental Administrator;
  • line manager for Facilities Manager, PGF Manager, Chief Teaching Technician and Department Safety Manger.

Building, Plant and Equipment:

  • maintenance of the building, specialised plant and departmental equipment, including the negotiation and monitoring of service contracts, with some delegation to Facilities Manager;
  • ensuring provision of necessary technical services. Liaison with central authorities to ensure the Department meets building safety requirements and complies with legal obligations;
  • liaison with contractors, water/gas/electricity suppliers as necessary;
  • departmental co-ordinator for major building works and refurbishments: planning new facilities with both EMBS and outside consultants; checking all plans and attending Design and Project Meetings; co-ordinating work on site;
  • monitoring and management of budget for repair and maintenance of departmental equipment;
  • working with others to bring departmental decisions on disposition of space to fruition.


  • first point of contact for building safety issues. Liaison with Administrator, Safety Officer, Safety Manager and others as necessary;
  • first point of contact for out of hours emergencies;
  • responsible to the Administrator for the security of the buildings of the Department.

Departmental services:

  • monitoring performance and warranties of facilities provided by the department;
  • provision of technical advice, usually with the aid of facilities manager and research technicians, to other members of staff;
  • co-ordinating duty assistants at weekends;
  • provision of information to University Offices and Officers as required;
  • arrangements of technical needs of visitors to the department;
  • general problem-solving and facilitation with Head of Department, Administrator, Chief Clerk and Facilities Manager.

 Fire Safety:

  • It is my responsibility as Fire Safety Manager to maintain the safe operation of the Fire Alarm, Emergency Lighting System, and all things related to Fire Safety. To assist me in this task I have a Deputy FSM, Barbara Landamore. Any problems or concerns can be reported to either one of us and we will take the appropriate action. Each floor also has a number of Fire Wardens, their primary duty is to act as Marshall’s (to assist with evacuating the building) in an emergency. Download a list of wardens and the rooms they cover.
