Postgraduate draft
The Department is an outstanding centre for research in plant and microbial sciences and offers unrivalled research, teaching and training to postgraduate students. It offers both PhDs or MPhils and provides students with the academically stimulating environment, broad education, guidance, opportunities and the facilities required to develop a range of different skills.
Excellent research infrastructure, including state of the art equipment, plant growth facilities and extensive computer and IT facilities and support as well as access to an extensive library as well as the Herbarium and Botanic Garden. A lively academic environment including seminars and presentations from international scientists, both in plant sciences and other disciplines, as well as opportunities and funding to attend international scientific conferences. A postgraduate training programme which will develop your knowledge base as well as enhancing your IT and presentation skills, along with yearly competitions for excellence in research, poster presentations and research seminars.
Opportunities for teaching by demonstrating in undergraduate practical classes and carrying out undergraduate supervisions (i.e. tutorials, small group teaching). The Department also has close links and collaborates with other science Departments in Cambridge as well as with local, national and international industry. A unique feature of studying in Cambridge is that you belong to a College, giving you the opportunity to mingle with students from all disciplines from Architecture to Zoology. Being part of a College also gives you the opportunity to be involved in sports and other social activities, and usually provides some form of accommodation.

Available PhD projects
Applicants should identify a project to apply for or approach the Head of Group they would like to be supervised by to discuss eligibility and availability. Several projects involve collaboration with industry, partner institutes, NGOs and plant breeders, which the Department has strong links with, including NIAB, British Antarctic Survey and organisations based at the Cambridge Conservation Research Institute.
