The Tom ap Rees fund supports fourth-year PhD students in need of financial assistance to help them complete their studies. Tom ap Rees was the 13th Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge. This fund was set up in 1996 after he was tragically killed on his bike on his way home from work.
We currently offer small awards of less than £1000 to a limited number of applicants each year. Our aim is to increase the fund to ensure we have resources to support all postgraduate students in need, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
Kaisa Kajala received support from the Tom ap Rees fund to attend her first international conference during her PhD at Cambridge – an important turning point that gave her confidence in the next phase of her career. Watch Kaisa’s story to hear how she benefitted from the fund.
