This one-week field course in Portugal is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn about plant diversity and adaptations to drought and high light in the field. Students also develop important research skills by carrying out short group research projects of their own design.
As part of a desire to widen participation, we want to raise funds to ensure all students who wish to attend the course can take full advantage of this opportunity, irrespective of their personal or financial background.
Over the past 23 years the Department has supported all second-year undergraduate students wanting to attend the course – around 700 students. The Department pays the majority of the costs and students make a small top-up contribution of around £200.
The Plant and Microbial Sciences field course fund provides support to those who would otherwise be prevented from attending due to financial limitations.
Sofia Miccolis attended the course in 2024. Read Sofia’s story to find out about her experience.
How you can help
£600 would enable the Department to fund the remaining costs for a student to attend the field trip and ensure we can continue to provide this support in future.
To support our students, you can donate online now. Alternatively, please contact Holly Singlehurst (hjs70@cam.ac.uk) who will be pleased to talk to you confidentially about how you might contribute.
