Bioinformatician

Professor Baulcombe's laboratory is at the forefront of research into small RNAs and their role in regulation, development and evolution. His group is generating a wealth of data using high throughput sequencing, as well as using genetic and cell biology approaches. There is a particular interest in developing methods for the analysis of large databases of siRNAs and miRNAs in Arabidopsis, Chlamydomonas, tomato and other plants, and for modelling the behaviour of small RNA systems and their effect on gene silencing at the RNA and DNA level. Within the laboratory there is a computational biology group that works closely with experimentalists in the lab. We are looking for talented individuals with quantitative and computational skills to join the group. Skills in one or more of the following would be an advantage: statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics, programming (R, Perl), databases (mySQL, Postgres). A real interest in biology is essential. You should have a higher degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with strong quantitative and/or programming skills and a good knowledge of biology

Undergraduate Teaching Administrator

We are seeking a capable and enthusiastic person to join us in this varied role, assisting the Plant Sciences Teaching Co-ordinator with daily organisation and co-ordination of the Department's undergraduate teaching activities. Main responsibilities include acting as Secretary to the Department's Teaching Committee and Management and Consultative Committees for undergraduate courses, and helping to organise two field courses per year (one in the UK and one in Portugal). Creative abilities would be useful in arranging student recruitment sessions and producing publicity material. You will also line manage the Department's receptionist.

Able to work both independently and in liaison with academic staff, practical organisers, technicians and undergraduates in Plant Sciences and other Departments, you will be well-organised and approachable. You should possess a good standard of written English and be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. Good IT skills are essential, including word-processing, email, Internet searches, and familiarity with spreadsheets and databases. You will have experience of preparing agendas and taking minutes. CamTools experience would be advantageous.

You should have relevant work experience in an office environment. Experience in an academic or educational setting is desirable. Further particulars are available.

Research Group Leader, Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge University

The Gatsby Charitable Foundation invites applications for Research Group Leader positions to be held at the Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge.

The positions are open to applicants of any nationality. The Gatsby Charitable Foundation intends that the positions will be awarded across a broad range of seniority, but applicants would typically have postdoctoral experience in a field related to the overall scientific focus of the Laboratory in plant development and in computational modelling of development. Applicants should be able to provide strong evidence of their potential to become independent scientific group leaders. Applicants who currently hold a permanent post in a University or other Research Organisation are welcome to apply.

Funding will initially be provided for five years, with a possible extension for a further five year term, with no overall limit on number of extensions. The laboratory has excellent core facilities, including growth room, glasshouse and computing facilities, Group Leaders will be provided with an annual research grant exceeding £250,000 per annum in addition to their salary. Once in post, group leaders will be eligible to apply for research grant funding from other sources.
