Alfonso joined the lab in 2015 following a Biotechnology degree at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and several internships in different science laboratories. His undergraduate thesis involved the genetic transformation of the tomato Solanum lycopersicum, with the goal of increasing salt and drought tolerance. He won a Leonardo da Vinci EU Scholarship to do a 6 month placement in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. He has also worked in the Department of Cellular Biology and Parasitology and the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Valencia. In 2014 he did a professional placement in a fertility centre in Mexico, assisting in the embryology and andrology units. Currently, Alfonso manages the lab whilst researching the evolution of plant pigments.
