Department of Plant Sciences

Inspiring the Next Generation of Plant Scientists

The Department has been awarded £18,500 from the University's Widening Participation Project Fund to establish the Cambridge Colleges Biosciences Experience project. Year 11 (16 year old) students from schools with low Oxbridge participation will visit Cambridge for the day, and will spend morning in a partner college. The students will then come into the Department for a mini-lecture and a practical class, exposing them to cutting-edge topics in Biosciences and Plant Biology.

The project, coordinated by Dr Katharine Hubbard, will be run in conjunction with the highly successful Cambridge Colleges Physics Experience programme at the Cavendish, and will hopefully inspire students both to apply to Cambridge and to consider Plant Sciences as a degree specialism. The first students on the programme will be visiting the department in March, and we aim to interact with over 500 students over the duration of the project.
