Plant Sciences Green Impact

Holders of the Gold Green Impact Award and Gold - Labs Green Impact Award

Gold Labs GI Award 2017

Green Impact Awards 2017 - 21/06/2017

The Plant Sciences Green Team has had another year of progress. We've completed the set! Gabriela Doria, Yi Zhang, Sue Aspinall and Martin Howes attended the annual ceremony at Wolfson College to collect our Gold-Labs Green Impact slate. Hot weather, beautiful gardens and top-notch canapes!

The feedback from our auditor, Olivia, was quite encouraging:

"...really incredible efforts taken by this department!

Particular efforts highlighted for praise include: waste-disposal (including cutting polystyrene waste); sharing of equipment; how close control of storage and purchasing was having a positive impact on performance.

The new addition to our slate family is on display at Reception.

Green Impact Awards 2016 - 02/06/2016

We did it! Plant Sciences Green Team achieved both awards that we went for this academic year: Gold and Silver - Labs. A big thank you to all those that helped along the way.

The awards ceremony celebrated the green efforts of the teams that took part and was held at Old Combinations Hall. It was presided over by Dame Fiona Reynolds - Master of Emmanuel College, former director of the National Trust and active board member on organisations ranging from the BBC to the Green Alliance.

After a brilliant speech she gave out the reclaimed roof slate awards. Martin even got a hug when he went up to collect the second award! He can now check 'get hugged by a Dame' off his bucket list.

As well as receiving our slates, there were various leaderboards to show which groups had achieved the most and improved the most. Plant Sciences did quite well!

2nd - Points gained over last year (324pts)

3rd - Overall Team Points (495pts)

5th - Top Labs Teams (173pts)

Does this mean that we are the third greenest group/department at the university...?!

Green Impact 2015-16

After our good work in achieving Silver in 2014-15, this year we have aimed higher. On Thursday 5th May we were audited by students for Green Impact Gold and Green Impact Silver Labs awards.

A workbook submitted by the team formed the basis of the audit, with the auditors - who had received IEMA-accredited training - asking for evidence and clarification on various points. We then got to show off some of our efforts!

Martin Howes, Colin Denston and Simon West attended the 2015 Green Impact awards ceremony, hosted at the Sainsbury Lab. As hoped for, the department received the Silver award to add to the Bronze award achieved in 2012.

The student auditors that visited the department were impressed with the widespread reminders to think about energy wastage, light switch labelling, April’s stationery amnesty and promotion of green events and activities.

It’s great to be recognised but there is always more that we can be doing. Contact Martin (meh73).

The reclaimed roof-slate award is currently proudly on display at Reception.

The Department has carried out a comprehensive COVID-19 risk assessment process and has opened to allow research work to take place. To ensure the safety of our staff, a range of measures to reduce building occupancy and allow strict social distancing have been introduced, including increased cleaning and hygiene regimes. We are currently not accepting visitors so please continue to contact us by email until further notice.
