Guide to lecturing within the Department
Lecture handouts
The expectations of lecture handouts varies according to the course. Note that to comply with copyright regulations you should acknowledge the source of copyright images and diagrams in your handout.
Part IA:
The norm is for students to be given a full handout containing as a lecture transcript all of the information in the lecture, together with all diagrams. It is essential that this handout corresponds with the order of the Powerpoint presentation. Any diagrams should be legible and ideally there should be sufficient space for annotation. Reference is usually made to the course text books (on the Course CamTools site) and a small number of specific references might be included as well as footnotes to guide supervisors. Handouts are printed in advance and should be given to the Teaching Laboratory (Room 210; email Barbara Landamore bmb10@cam.ac.uk) in hard copy at least one week before the lecture course begins. It is usual to provide a single handout for the whole lecture series.

It is usual to provide a single handout for the whole lecture series. In addition a list of references is provided for each lecture. Typically the reference list contains 3 or 4 review articles plus a similar number of recent papers. Students find it useful if this list is annotated similar to many Trends articles with a star for essential reading, together with a couple of lines about what is contained in the reference.
Part II:
Handouts range from printouts of Powerpoint slides (which should be sufficiently large to be legible, as well as spaced to allow for annotation e.g. 2 per page), to more detailed notes. Handouts can be photocopied - ask the Teaching Laboratory (Room 210; email Barbara Landamore bmb10@cam.ac.uk) for help.
